Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers Red & White Titan Pro Game Used Stick - Used in His Rookie Season of 1979-80 - Extremely Rare
Lot #355
Offered with impeccable provenance, this incredible rookie stick was obtained by an employee at Madison Square Garden during Wayne Gretzky's rookie season of 1979-80. It has remained unblemished and incredibly preserved for the past 34 years and is entering our hobby for the very first time. This Gretzky rookie stick hails from the same collection as the Ken Dryden game used team signed 1979 Challenge Cup stick that is also being offered for sale in our Spring 2014 Auction!

This red and white Titan Pro hockey stick was game used by Wayne Gretzky while playing for the Edmonton Oilers during the 1979-80 NHL season, his rookie year. Gretzky is considered to be the greatest hockey player of all time. His career achievements do nothing to dispel those opinions. He is the record holder in more categories than there is room to list. Some of his more important accomplishments are: All-time leader in regular season goals 894, assists 1963, points 2857, playoff goals 122, playoff assists 260 and playoff points 382. He holds the single season marks for goals 92, assists 163 and points 215. His trophy case includes 4 Stanley Cups, 5 Lady Byng Trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, 1 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, 5 Lester B. Pearson awards as the NHL’s outstanding player, 10 Art Ross Trophies for leading the NHL in scoring, 2 Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP and 9 Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s MVP. Gretzky was 15 times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and played in 18 NHL All Star games. He proudly represented Team Canada in the 1981, 84, 87 and 91 Canada Cups, the 1996 World Cup and the Olympics. Immediately upon his retirement from hockey, the normal waiting period having been waived, Wayne was unanimously elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

This stunning red and white Titan rookie stick has the player name “W. Gretzky” stamped on the side. The stick is fully taped on the butt and blade and has the player number “99” and “Gretz” penned in black marker below the butt. This stick is uncracked and has remained in remarkable condition over the past 34 years since leaving the ice during Wayne's rookie season. Shown above are some terrific images of "The Great One" taken during his rookie season. Of noteworthy importance is that the first Topps and O-Pee-Chee hockey card images to feature Gretzky in an NHL uniform, show him using this exact red and white Titan Pro model stick. Considered the rarest and most coveted of Gretzky's rookie stick models, this example has sat in the private hands of a former Madison Square Garden employee since being acquired at MSG during the 1979-80 season. To our knowledge this is the first time that one of these red and white Titan Pro's has ever been offered for sale at auction. Adding further to the appeal of this offering is the tape job which has remained completely intact both on the butt and blade. The blade features Wayne's patented vintage stunted heel tape job which he used briefly during the beginning origins of his Hall of Fame career and further sets it apart from other early Gretzky exemplars that have surfaced. We cannot over emphasize the true rarity of this rookie stick and we are certain that this offering will hold special appeal to any Gretzky fan or advanced collector. It is therefore with great pleasure that we bring to auction this truly important Wayne Gretzky game used rookie stick, hockey royalty at its best, choice!
