Rick Wamsley St. Catharines Fincups Fiberglass Game Worn Mask - Circa 1976 Wamsley Photo
Lot #272
This white fiberglass goalie mask was game worn by Rick Wamsley while playing juniors for the St. Catharines Fincups in the OHA around 1976. The Montreal Canadiens, sensing that Ken Dryden’s career was coming to an end, selected Wamsley in the 3rd round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Rick cracked the Canadiens lineup in 1980-81 and spent the first 4 seasons of his 13-year NHL career with Montreal. Wamsley would go on to represent the St. Louis Blues for parts of 4 seasons, the Calgary Flames for a handful more and then wrapped up his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the early 1990’s. During Wamsley’s first full season with Les Habitants, he teamed up with Denis Herron to capture the 1982 William M. Jennings Trophy. Rick posted 204 Wins and 46 Ties against only 131 Losses during his 407 NHL career games. His career best 27 Wins came with Montreal in 1982-83. Wamsley represented Team Canada in the 1983 and 1985 World Championships. Since his playing days came to an end, Wamsley has been a scout and goaltending coach for the Blues, Blue Jackets, Maple Leafs and is currently the goaltending coach of the Ottawa Senators.

This white fiberglass mask was originally sourced through a US goalie coach and consultant for the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. On January 3, 2015, when the Senators came to Boston to play the Bruins, our consignor met up with Wamsley at the Ritz Carlton in Boston prior to Rick boarding the team bus. Our consignor held the mask in plain site and Rick immediately recognized his mask and came over in astonishment. He claimed it was his first pro mask. He signed the back plate “This is my junior mask 75/76 St. Catharines Fincups Rick Wamsley”. A photo of that meeting will also accompany your purchase.
