Pit Martin played 19 seasons in the NHL for the Red Wings, Bruins, Black Hawks and Canucks. He is best known as a Black Hawk however, playing for them for 11 seasons and having most of his best years in their uniform.
All told Martin played in 1101 NHL games recording 324 goals and 809 points. Pit played in 4 NHL All Star games and was awarded the Bill Masterton trophy in 1969-70, which is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.
On November 30, 2008, Martin was reported missing following a snowmobile accident on Lake Kanasuta in Quebec. He was riding a snowmobile behind a friend when the ice on the lake collapsed shortly after his friend had passed over it. Martin was pronounced dead on December 1, 2008. On December 2, 2008, Martin's body was recovered from the lake.
