Shmyr had a 16-year professional career playing in the NHL for the Blackhawks, Golden Seals, North Stars and Whalers. In addition to NHL play, Shmyr also starred in the WHA where he played for the Crusaders, Mariners and Oilers. Paul was one of the top defensemen in the WHA where he was named a First Team All Star in 1973, 1974 and 1976 and a Second Team All Star in 1979. He won the leagues top defenseman trophy in 1976. Shmyr finished his WHA career third all-time in games played, twentieth in assists and fourth in penalty minutes. He represented Team Canada in the 1974 Summit Series and was one of only two WHA players (the other being Bobby Hull) to be invited to try out for Team Canada for the 1976 Canada Cup. Paul died of throat cancer in 2004 at the age of 58.
