Mid 1980's Chris Nilan Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey
Lot #540

This road red knit gamer by CCM was worn by Chris Nilan circa the mid 1980’s. The Montreal Canadiens selected Nilan in the 19th round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. Considered a longshot to ever make the NHL, he proved everybody wrong as he attained legendary status spending 13 seasons in the league and becoming one of only 9 players to surpass the 3000 PIM mark. Chris spent his first 9 seasons in the NHL as a member of the Canadiens, winning the Stanley Cup in 1986. He would later play for the Rangers and the Bruins before retiring after a final 17 games with Montreal in 1991-92. During the Canadiens Stanley Cup playoff run in 1986, Chris played in 18 post-season games and compiled 141 PIMS! His physical presence played a key role in Montreal’s success that season. Chris, a native of Boston Massachusetts, also went on to play in the 1988 Canada Cup representing Team USA. In 688 career regular season games, Nilan accumulated 3043 PIMS. In 111 playoff games “Knuckles” added another 531 PIMS! His single season career best total of 358 PIMS came in 1984-85 with the Canadiens.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, loads of washed out bloodstains, heavy pilling both inside and out as well as several team-sewn repairs. A custom double loop fight strap is sewn to the inside, just beneath the back numbers. Shown above, for your enjoyment, is some terrific footage of Nilan slugging it out during the mid 1980’s in his road red Les Habitants jersey. A Nilan gamer has traditionally been among the tougher sweaters of the vintage 1980’s era goons to obtain. This fantastic well-worn, bloodstained, Stanley Cup era example was donned by one of the NHL’s all-time bad boys and should stand front and center in any fighter’s collection of gamers, choice!
