Description
Mid 1970's Rene Robert Buffalo Sabres Game Worn Jersey - Rene Robert Letter
Lot #11

This jersey originates from the personal collection of Rene Robert. A letter of authenticity signed by Mr. Robert will be included with your purchase.

This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Rene Robert circa the mid 1970’s. On March 4th 1972, the Buffalo Sabres put the 3rd and final piece in place in forming the French Connection as they obtained Rene Robert in exchange for Eddie Shack from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Robert was in his sophomore season when the Sabres acquired him and he immediately proved his worth, scoring 6 goals in the clubs final 12 games. The 1972-73 season saw this Right Winger catapult into national stardom as he lit the lamp 40 times and totaled 83 points. His efforts earned him his first of two NHL All Star game appearances. Merely 2 seasons later, Robert and his Sabres had their best season as the team pushed the defending Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers squad to game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Rene again hit the 40-goal mark that season and also added 60 helpers, giving him the only 100-point season of his career. Again his efforts were rewarded with an NHL All Star game appearance and also with a 2nd Team NHL All Star selection at Right Wing.

Robert’s career spanned 12 seasons and he played for the Buffalo Sabres for parts of 8 of them. In 744 career games, Robert scored 284 goals and 702 points. In forming the right side of one of hockey’s all-time great lines, The French Connection, this Right Wing with blazing speed and a deadly shot found a special place in the hearts of the Buffalo faithful. His jersey number 14 has been retired to the rafters and hangs alongside the retired sweaters of his French Connection linemates, Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin.

The game wear on this mid 1970’s era sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, plenty of board paint transfer from the boards at the old Aud, washed out bloodstains, heavy inner pilling and half a dozen team-sewn repairs. Found on the inside of this magnificent sweater is a custom old-school fight strap. On the inside of the crest lies a black sharpie autograph in Robert’s own hand that reads “Rene Robert 14 The French Connection”.

It is with great pleasure that we offer here, Rene Robert’s mid 1970’s home gamer, worn at the Aud in front of the hometown fans during the prime of his All Star career. This jersey originated from the personal collection of Rene Robert, entering our hobby nearly 8 years ago and remains to this day one of a scant few examples of a Robert Sabres jersey known to exist. As these gems rarely if ever see the light of day, we wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of this incredible Hall of Fame worthy, French Connection gamer, choice!
