Lot of (39) 1984-85 Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers Team Issued Postcards
Lot #550
This lot contains (39) 1984-85 Wayne Gretzky team issued postcards. Gretzky began his professional hockey career at the age of 17 in the World Hockey Association. After playing only 8 games with the Indianapolis Racers, he joined the Edmonton Oilers, the place he would call home for the next decade. During that time he brought the sport of hockey into prime time, as he assaulted the record books with sheer abandon. He would captain the Edmonton Oilers to 4 Stanley Cup titles in 9 NHL seasons as he led them to dynasty status. Life after Edmonton consisted of 8 years in Los Angeles, where he helped to revive hockey in the state of California. Wayne brought winning hockey to LA and captained the Kings to an appearance in the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals. After an 18-game stint in St. Louis, Gretzky completed his career alongside some of his former Edmonton teammates in the Big Apple, spending 3 seasons with the New York Rangers.

Gretzky is considered by most to be the greatest hockey player of all time, and one of the world’s all-time greatest athletes. His career achievements do nothing to dispel those opinions. He is the record holder in more categories than there is room to list. Some of his more important accomplishments are: All-time leader in regular season goals 894, assists 1963, points 2857, playoff goals 122, playoff assists 260 and playoff points 382. He holds the single season marks for goals 92, assists 163 and points 215. His trophy case includes 4 Stanley Cups, 5 Lady Byng Trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, 1 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, 5 Lester B. Pearson awards as the NHL’s outstanding player, 10 Art Ross Trophies for leading the NHL in scoring, 2 Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP and 9 Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s MVP. Gretzky was 15 times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and played in 18 NHL All Star games. He proudly represented Team Canada in the 1981, 84, 87 and 91 Canada Cups, the 1996 World Cup and the Olympics. Immediately upon his retirement from hockey, the normal waiting period having been waived, Wayne was unanimously elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. As baseball did for Jackie Robinson’s number 42, in further tribute to ‘The Great One’, his player number 99 was retired by the NHL and will never be issued again.

The cards measure 4 ½ x 6 ½ and are in beautiful condition.
