Late 1980's Rick Tocchet Flyers Game Worn Jersey
Lot #54

This road air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Rick Tocchet circa the late 1980’s. Tocchet began his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984-85 and as a rookie was treated to a Stanley Cup Finals run where the Flyers fell to the Edmonton Oilers. Two seasons later, Rick would again join his Flyers teammates in another incredible Stanley Cup Finals run that pushed Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers to a game 7. Tocchet’s ride in Philadelphia lasted into the 1991-92 season, when he was dealt for Mark Recchi.

In his first season in Pittsburgh, Tocchet won his only Stanley Cup trophy as he teamed on a line with Mario Lemieux. Rick’s career lasted 18 seasons that included an 8-year run with the Flyers to begin it and another 3-year run with the same team to complete it. In the middle were notable stays in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Washington, Boston and Phoenix.

During his career, Tocchet was twice a 40+ goal scorer. His career total of 440 goals and 952 points may surprise some, whereas his 2970 career PIMS should surprise nobody. Tocchet didn’t let up come playoff time either, as evidenced by his 471 playoff PIMS in 145 playoff games. Tocchet was a 4-time participant in the NHL All Star game.

Proudly hand sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. Tocchet’s custom lace fight strap is hand sewn into the back number. A black sharpie autograph in Rick’s own hand is found beneath the Captain’s “C” on the left breast. Game use consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer and inner pilling. Tocchet didn’t become the regular team Captain until the 1991-92 season. This shirt was obviously used to fill in for the injured regular Team Captain of this era, either Dave Poulin or Ron Sutter. A great opportunity for the diehard Flyers fan to acquire, what may well be, Tocchet’s first Captain’s jersey.
