Late 1970ís Peter Stastny Team Czechoslovakia Game Worn Jersey
Lot #23
This white heavy mesh gamer by Sandow SK was worn by Peter Stastny circa the late 1970’s while playing for his native Czechoslovakia. Stastny entered the NHL in 1980 following a lengthy professional career in Communist Czechoslovakia where he starred alongside his two brothers. Stastny led his country to the 1976 Canada Cup Finals and also played in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid where he scored 7 goals and 14 points in 6 Olympic games. Stastny led the Czechs to an improbable Gold Medal at the 1976 World Championships at just 19 years of age. He captured another Gold and two Silvers in the next three years, as he arguably became Europe’s best player before reaching his mid twenties. In a shock to the hockey world, Peter defected from Czechoslovakia along with his younger brother Anton in 1980, followed a year later by his older brother Marian. Together, the trio played for the Quebec Nordiques and dazzled fans all across North America with their immense talent. Peter was awarded the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 1980-81, following the first of seven 100-point seasons during the decade of the 1980’s.

Due to the late start of his NHL career, Stastny’s final numbers are somewhat tempered, albeit still very impressive. He ended his career with 450 goals, 789 assists and 1289 points in only 977 games and was one of the highest scoring players of the 1980’s, a decade which saw him partake in 6 different NHL All Star games. Peter proudly wore the Captain’s “C” in Quebec for five years and will forever be remembered as one of the finest that ever donned a Nordiques sweater. Following his days in Quebec, Stastny joined the New Jersey Devils where he played for parts of four years before spending a final two years with the St. Louis Blues. Still to this day considered one of the best European players in the history of the sport, Stastny was elected to the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Hockey Hall of Fame with the class of 1998.

This stunning white mesh gamer is trimmed in red and blue and features the Czechoslovakian Team crest on the front. Blue lace is strung through the eyelets that intersect the red, white and blue trimmed collar. Stastny’s surname along with his first initial is found individually sewn to the upper verso of this Sandow SK jersey. The game wear on this vintage sweater consists of some stick and slash marks, mild un-repaired trauma, stitch pops and inner pilling. Over the past 30 years this is just the second example of a Peter Stastny Czechoslovakian gamer that we’ve ever had the pleasure to handle. A hobby rarity that would become an instant highlight in any serious collection of international game worn jerseys, choice!
