Late 1950s Billy McNeill Detroit Red Wings Wool Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #20

This home red wool gamer by Lippman’s Sporting Goods was worn by Billy McNeill circa the Late 1950’s. As the 1950’s began, the NHL witnessed the dominance of the Red Wings who were led throughout the decade by Hall of Famers such as Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Red Kelly, Sid Abel, Alex Delvecchio, Norm Ullman and Marcel Pronovost. Detroit appeared in 5 Stanley Cup Finals over a 7-year period to start the decade and walked away with 4 Stanley Cup Championships. The 1950’s are easily considered the best decade in franchise history.

McNeill made his NHL debut in 1956-57 with the Red Wings where he played for each of his 6 NHL seasons. This Edmonton native also spent a good amount of time in the WHL where he played with a number of franchises including lengthy stints with the Edmonton Flyers and the Vancouver Canucks.

Sewn perfectly into the hem of this gamer are the Lippman’s Sporting Goods and size tags. The game wear on this size 48 sweater is solid and consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes and trauma, inner pilling and nearly 20 team-sewn repairs. Shown above are a couple of beautiful photo matches of McNeill wearing this exact jersey circa the late 1950’s. This wonderful example sports eye-popping deep red color, tremendous eye appeal, fine game use and is accompanied by a couple of beautiful photo matches, choice!
