Early 1990’s Al Iafrate Washington Capitals Practice Worn Jersey
Lot #87

This blue air-knit practice jersey by CCM was worn by Al Iafrate circa the early 1990’s during practice sessions with the Washington Capitals. The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Iafrate with the 4th overall pick in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. This Dearborn, MI native spent time with the 1983-84 US National Team and then represented Team USA in the 1984 Olympics before joining the NHL. Al would spend parts of 7 seasons with the Maple Leafs before a deal sent him to the Washington Capitals in 1990-91. Iafrate played for parts of four seasons with the Capitals before finishing up his career with a partial season in Boston and two more in San Jose. Looking back on Al’s dynamic career, a classic case of “what if” occurs when contemplating his devastating knee injury in the spring of 1990. Despite his physical setbacks, this talented rearguard played in four NHL All Star games and was named 2nd Team NHL All Star in 1993. His booming slapper, that was often clocked at better than 100 MPH and captured the hardest shot event at the Skills competition, helped him eclipse the 20-goal plateau on 3 occasions, with a career best of 25 coming in 1992-93 with Washington. “Big Al” also played with an edge as evidenced by his string of 6 consecutive triple digit PIMS seasons and a career best of 180 PIMS coming in 1991-92 with the Capitals.

This size 54 practice jersey shows nice use that includes stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and fine inner pilling. Al’s surname and player number adorn the verso. A nice vintage Caps sweater worn by one of the best defenseman of his era.
