Hull is considered one of the game’s all-time greats and was so recognized in the now revered ‘The Hockey News’ book which ranked the 50 greatest players in NHL history. Bobby was honored as the 8th greatest player in NHL history in that publication. Not only did Bobby dominate the NHL, in a prominent list which ranks the Top 50 players in WHA history, Bobby Hull was voted a resounding #1!
Bobby finished his NHL career with 610 goals, which ranks him among the all time elite in that category. He tabbed 1170 NHL points, another lofty total obtained during a time when 100 points in a season was monumental. In fact it wasn’t until the 1968-69 NHL season that the first 100 point effort was ever recorded. After a 15-year NHL career as a member of the Chicago Black Hawks, Hull jumped to the WHA’s Winnipeg Jets where he spent the next 7 seasons. In those 7 seasons, Hull scored 303 goals and amassed 638 points in merely 411 games played. Mind you, these staggering totals were accomplished while Bobby was in his mid to late 30’s.
Hull played part of one more NHL season following the collapse of the WHA as a 40-year-old for both the Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers before hanging up the skates for good. His list of awards include being a (12) time 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and a (5) time 1st or 2nd team WHA All Star. Bobby won (1) Stanley Cup, (1) Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, (1) Lady Byng Trophy for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, (3) Art Ross Trophies for leading the NHL in scoring, (2) Hart Memorial Trophies as NHL MVP and (2) Gary Davidson trophies as the WHA MVP. A professional career that includes over 900 goals and 1800 career points ranks The Golden Jet as one of the sports true legends.
