Description
Carl Brewer Detroit Red Wings Montreal Game Used Stick
Lot #261
This Montreal Surprise hockey stick was game used by Carl Brewer while playing for the Detroit Red Wings. Brewer began his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1958. He played 8 seasons with the Leafs and was named a First Team NHL All Star in 1963 and a Second Team NHL All Star in 1962 and 1965. He was also a Second Team NHL All Star in 1970 with the Red Wings. He won three Stanley Cup Championships with the Maple Leafs in 1962, 1963 and 1964.

This Montreal stick has the player name “Carl Brewer” stamped on the side. The player number “6” is incorrectly stamped above the player name as Brewer wore number “5”. This stick is fully taped on the butt and blade. Brewer was a player/coach in Finland with HIFK Helsinki during the 1968-69 season and brought this stick back, most likely explaining the incorrect player number. He aided the development of hockey so much in Finland that he is referred to as “the flather of hockey” in their country. This stick was acquired by our consignor while with his friend at Olympia Stadium in the late 1960’s. His friend, an Olympia Stadium operations employee in charge of the ice, indicated that the “equipment” in the storage room across the hall from the Red Wings dressing room was about to be discarded and that he was free to help himself if there was anything he wanted. This is also when he acquired the Bill Gadsby jersey from last auction and Gordie Howe prototype stick in this auction. A Montreal Surprise is a very rare stick as we cannot recall another being seen at auction any time in the recent past.
