2008-09 John Tavares London Knights Game Worn Jersey - Career Goals OHL Record Breaking Season - Team Letter
Lot #195

This incredible offering originates directly from the London Knights. A London Knights team letter will accompany your purchase stating that this jersey was worn by John Tavares during 2008-09 Ontario Hockey League regular season and playoffs.

This white knit and mesh gamer by Reebok was worn by John Tavares during the 2008-09 OHL season. It took an “exceptional” designation for Tavares, who is hockey’s reigning #1 overall pick, to be granted draft eligible status at the age of 14. This was the first time that such an exception was ever granted. The Oshawa Generals benefited from the ruling and selected John with the first overall pick in 2005 at the tender age of 14. John would follow in the footsteps of the great Bobby Orr and represent Oshawa as a young teenager. As did Orr, Tavares would dominate his older foes, scoring a remarkable 45 goals and 77 points as a 15-year old rookie in 2005-06. He was named OHL and CHL rookie of the year.

During his 2nd season, Tavares made news across the entire hockey world. That season, as a 16-year old, Tavares broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for goals in a season. In 1977-78, The Great Gretzky, at 17 years of age, scored an incredible 70 goals, a mark which stood without challenge for 30 years. Tavares made the record his own, lighting the lamp a resounding 72 times at the age of 16! He would also chip in 62 assists for a remarkable total of 134 points in 67 games played. The league recognized Tavares’ outstanding accomplishments by awarding the 16-year old with the Red Tilson Trophy as the most outstanding player in the league. He also was awarded the CHL’s Player of the Year award. In his 3rd season, in 59 games, Tavares netted 40 goals and assisted on 78 others for a 118 point season. He was also selected to help Team Canada’s National Junior Team win their 4th consecutive Gold Medal.

Last season Tavares was dealt by the Oshawa Generals to the London Knights mid-season. All told he scored 58 goals and 104 points in 56 games played last year. What he did while wearing this jersey was remarkable. As a member of the London Knights, Tavares scored 32 goals and 50 points in only 24 games! He then notched another 21 playoff points in 14 post season contests. While with the Knights, John broke another long standing record. On March 8, 2009, John broke Peter Lee's 33 year old record of career OHL goals. Lee finished his 4+ year career with 213 goals. On that night John scored his 214th career goal and finished his OHL career with 215 goals in 4 seasons. Also, with John only playing for London for 24 games, this is easily his rarest "pre-rookie" jersey.

John was selected #1 overall by the New York Islanders in last years NHL expansion draft. As of this writing John was off to an exciting start with 5 goals and 11 points in his first 14 games. Sewn to the right breast of this sweater is the OHL patch. Sewn to the left breast is the Reebok patch. The CHL patch is embroidered to the back hem. The London Knights team logo is sewn to the chest. Tavares’ surname is sewn to the back while his player number 61 is sewn to the back and both sleeves.

Worn during his brief time with London last season, the game use on this sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer and inner pilling. Sewn to the inside hem is the official London Knights game worn jersey patch. What we all wouldn’t give to own a Gretzky jersey from his pre-NHL days right about now. Here is your chance to own John Tavares’ London Knights game worn jersey from his brief and final stop before joining the NHL. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by! This jersey will be accompanied by a Knights team letter.
