On October 4, 2008, the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins squared off at Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden in the NHL’s first ever-regular season game in Europe. The thrilling contest was won by the Penguins 4-3 in overtime. This red air-knit gamer by Reebok was worn by Jason Smith during the 2008-09 NHL season, during the NHL’s season opener in Sweden. The New Jersey Devils selected Smith in the 1st round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. After making his NHL debut in 1993-94 and spending parts of 4 seasons with the Devils, Smith played in parts of 3 more in Toronto before joining the Edmonton Oilers where he cleared creases for parts of 8 seasons. Smith’s final 2 NHL stops came in Philadelphia and Ottawa. This 15-year veteran played in 1008 NHL games and accumulated 1099 PIMS along the way.
Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the Premiere Stockholm October 4-5, 2008 patch. Smith wore this sweater throughout the October 4th game and the game wear on this size 58 sweater is on the lighter side as would be expected. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Smith wearing this exact jersey during the season opener in Sweden. Sewn to the inside hem is the official NHL game worn jersey tagging. A beautiful offering from the NHL’s regular season debut in Europe. This jersey will be accompanied by a Senators team letter.
