2007-08 Olaf Kolzig Washington Capitals Game Worn Mask Photo Match
Lot #524

This beautiful painted goalie mask by Don Malerba of “The Pro’s Choice” was worn by Olaf Kolzig while playing for the Washington Capitals during the 2007-08 NHL season. The Washington Capitals selected Kolzig in the 1st round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Olaf would go on to become the most successful goalie in Capitals history, backstopping the club for 16 seasons and winning better than 300 games during his career. “Olie The Goalie” led the Caps to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in their history in 1998. He captured the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender in 2000 and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2006. This two-time NHL All Star Game participant was also named 1st Team NHL All Star in 2000. On the international scene, Kolzig represented Germany in numerous World Championships, 2 World Cups of Hockey and 2 Olympics. “Olie” won his first Stanley Cup Championship as the Capitals Goalie Coach in 2017-18.

This beautiful mask, made by Don Malerba and painted by Ron Slater, was worn by Kolzig in 2007-08. “The Pro’s Choice” sticker is inside as well as the signatures of Don Malerba and Ron Slater. On the backplate are the names of Kolzig’s three children Ashlyn, Kendall and Carson. Below his children’s names it reads “Athletes’s Against Autism”, the name of the charity he started, along with fellow NHLers Byron Dafoe and Scott Mellanby. Across the bottom it reads “Olie the Goalie”. Kolzig also started the “Carson Kolzig Foundation” for youth Autism in honor of his son Carson who is autistic. The mask shows solid game use and has all the inside padding with the exception of the sweat band which has been removed. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Kolzig wearing this exact mask during the 2007-08 NHL season. A beautiful piece from this Vezina Trophy winner.
