Lot #117

This home blue air-knit gamer by Reebok was worn by Ilya Kovalchuk during the 2007-08 NHL season. The Atlanta Thrashers selected Kovalchuk with the 1st overall pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. This Russian native made his NHL debut in 2001-02 with Atlanta where he spent the first 8 years of his career. The Thrashers dealt Kovalchuk to the New Jersey Devils in 2009-10 and Ilya played for parts of four seasons with the Devils that included a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2012. Half a season later, with 11 years of NHL service in tow, abruptly left the NHL to play for St. Petersburg in the KHL. Kovalchuk dominated the Russian League for 6 seasons before agreeing to a deal with the Los Angeles Kings and returning to the NHL this past season.

Already to his credit is a pair of 50-goal seasons and an additional three 40-goal seasons. Kovalchuk has played in three NHL All Star Games, has 1st and a 2nd Team NHL All Star selections to his credit and was the winner of the 2003-04 Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer. At just 35-years of age, this winger despite missing 6 seasons has already eclipsed 430 career goals, with his sights set on the prestigious 500 Goal club. Ilya’s international resume is lengthy and impressive with appearances in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, a dozen World Championships that includes three Gold Medals and the 2002, 2006, 2010 and the 2018 Olympics where he captured his first Olympic Gold Medal.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. Sewn to the right breast is the Atlanta 2008 All Star Game patch. The game wear on this 1st set size 56 sweater is solid and consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops, plenty of Edge material pulls, exterior pilling, fine inner pilling and a handful of team-sewn repairs. Shown above are a number of beautiful photo matches of Kovalchuk wearing this exact jersey during the 2007-08 season. Kovalchuk was magnificent while wearing this sweater on home ice, as he struck for a career best 52 goals and finished runner-up to Alex Ovechkin for the Rocket Richard Trophy earning the 2nd All Star Game appearance of his career. Well-worn All Star patched example, complete with multiple photo matches and sporting the coveted letter of honor. This jersey will be accompanied by a Thrashers team letter.
