The Philadelphia Flyers selected Pitkanen in the 1st round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. This native of Oulu, Finland made his NHL debut in 2003-04 with the Flyers where he skated for three seasons. Joni went on to represent the Edmonton Oilers for a year before spending his final five seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. On the international stage, Pitkanen represented Finland a couple of times in the World Juniors as well as the 2010 Olympics.
