2004 Alex Ovechkin Team Russia World Cup of Hockey Game Worn Jersey – Rookie – “2004 World Cup of Hockey” - Gary Bettman NHLPA LOA
Lot #131

This red air-knit gamer by Nike was worn by Team Russia’s Alex Ovechkin during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. The Washington Capitals selected Ovechkin with the 1st overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. After playing in his native Russia for 4 seasons, Ovechkin made his NHL debut with the Capitals in 2005-06 and hasn’t looked back. This prolific scorer now has 13 years of service to the Caps and just this past season joined the vaunted 600 Goal club, placing himself inside the top 20 in NHL history at just 32 years of age! Alex has seven 50-goal seasons to his credit as well as four 100-point seasons. His mantel is full of hardware including the 2005-06 Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year, an Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer, 3 Hart Memorial Trophies as the NHL’s MVP, 3 Ted Lindsay Awards as the NHL’s outstanding player and an incredible 7 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies as the NHL’s leading goal scorer. Also to his credit are (11) 1st and 2nd Team NHL All Star selections as well as 7 NHL All Star game appearances. Internationally, Ovechkin has represented his native Russia in numerous World Championships, the 2004 and 2016 World Cups of Hockey and 3 Olympics.

Sewn to the front left shoulder of this gamer is the 2004 World Cup of Hockey patch. The game wear on this size 56 sweater consists of a couple of handfuls of stick and slash marks scattered about the front, back and both sleeves as well as some board burns and inner pilling. Affixed to the inside hem is the official Nike barcode. The 18-year-old Ovechkin was the NHL’s top-ranked prospect when Russia’s Head Coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov named him to the 2004 World Cup Team. The naming of Russia’s World Cup squad occurred prior to the NHL’s 2004 Entry Draft where the Washington Capitals took Alex 1st overall and forever changed the face of their franchise in late June 2004. Ovechkin took to the World Cup ice for Russia in August and September 2004 for the first time as the property of the Washington Capitals. This gamer is packed with incredible provenance and will be accompanied by an official NHL and NHLPA LOA stating that Ovechkin wore this jersey during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. The LOA is signed by long time NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman. An incredible opportunity to acquire the pre-rookie jersey of one of the elite players in the history of the sport, choice!
