Lot #118

This road white air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Ilya Kovalchuk during the 2003-04 NHL season. The Atlanta Thrashers selected Kovalchuk with the 1st overall pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. This Russian native made his NHL debut in 2001-02 with Atlanta where he spent the first 8 years of his NHL career. The Thrashers dealt Kovalchuk to the New Jersey Devils in 2009-10 and Ilya played for parts of four seasons with the Devils that included a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2012. Half a season later, with 11 years of NHL service in tow, Kovalchuk abruptly left the NHL to play for St. Petersburg in the KHL. Kovalchuk dominated the Russian League for 6 seasons before agreeing to a deal with the Los Angeles Kings and returning to the NHL in 2018. Since returning, Kovalchuk has played for the Kings, Canadiens and Capitals.

Already to his credit is a pair of 50-goal seasons and an additional three 40-goal seasons. Kovalchuk has played in three NHL All Star Games, has 1st and a 2nd Team NHL All Star selections to his credit and was the winner of the 2003-04 Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer. Ilya’s international resume is lengthy and impressive with appearances in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, a dozen World Championships that includes three Gold Medals as well as four Olympics spanning 2002-2018 where in his most recent appearance, he captured his first Olympic Gold Medal.

Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the Atlanta Thrashers 5-year anniversary patch. Sewn to the left breast is the Dan Snyder ‘37’ Memorial patch. The game wear on this 1st set size 54 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, trauma, inner pilling and a handful of team-sewn repairs. Shown above are a number of beautiful photo matches of Kovalchuk wearing this exact jersey during the 2003-04 season. On the inside crest is a beautiful blue sharpie signature in Kovalchuk’s own hand. A photo of the signing is shown above. Sewn to the inside hem is the official NHL game worn jersey tagging. Kovalchuk was magnificent while wearing this sweater during the memorable 2003-04 campaign. He struck for 41 goals to lead the entire NHL and thus captured the Rocket Richard Trophy. Ilya’s 87 points were the league’s 2nd best total making him runner-up for the Art Ross Trophy. For his efforts, he earned his first NHL All Star Game appearance and was named 2nd team NHL All Star. A well-worn multi-patched and photo matched example that hails from an award laden season.
