After playing his junior career with the Ottawa 67’s, McCauley made his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1997-98. Alyn spent the first 6 years of his 9-year NHL career with the Leafs before representing the San Jose Sharks for parts of 3 seasons and then completing his career in 2006-07 with the Los Angeles Kings. The 2003-04 season saw McCauley set career bests in Goals (20), Assists (27) and Points (47).
