2000-01 Saku Koivu Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey
Lot #116
This road red knit gamer by Koho was worn by Saku Koivu during the 2000-01 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Koivu in the 1st round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. After leaving Turku, Finland in 1995, Koivu embarked on an NHL career that began in 1995-96 with the Canadiens and continues to the present day in Anaheim. Koivu is tied with Jean Beliveau as the longest serving Captain’s in the storied history of the Montreal Canadiens, having served in that role for 10 of his 14 seasons in Montreal. Saku was also the first European born player to serve in that distinguished role for Les Habitants. In September of 2001, Koivu learned that he was suffering from non-Hodgkins lymphoma, causing his to miss nearly the entire 2001-02 campaign. His remarkable comeback and the continuance of his NHL career have proven quite inspirational to many and won him the 2001-02 Bill Masterton Trophy. Saku is also the recipient of the 2006-07 King Clancy Memorial Award. This NHL All Star has also partook in 2 World Cups of Hockey, numerous World Championships and 4 Olympics in representation of his native Finland.

Sewn proudly to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. The game wear on this size 54 sweater consists of stick marks, board burns and inner pilling. On the front chest is a bold black sharpie signature in Koivu’s own hand. A nice Captain’s jersey that was worn during the first half of Saku’s career.
