1997-98 Mark Messier NHL All Star Game Worn Jersey – “1998 All Star” – NHLPA Letter
Lot #82
This burgundy air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Mark Messier during the 1998 NHL All Star Game in Vancouver. Messier made his debut in 1978-79 in the WHA where he played for the Indianapolis Racers and Cincinnati Stingers. Following the merge with the NHL, Messier made his NHL debut in 1979-80 with the Edmonton Oilers where he would star for 12 seasons. During his time with the Oilers, Mark won five Stanley Cups and became recognized as one of the sports’ all-time greats. In 1991-92, Messier made his New York Rangers debut and helped lead the team to the President’s Trophy in his first season. Merely three years into his tenure, Messier helped the 1994 Rangers to their first and only Stanley Cup since 1940. Following 6 seasons on Broadway, Messier joined the Vancouver Canucks for three seasons before returning to the Rangers for the final four years of his career. All told, Messier played in 25 NHL seasons.

Messier’s legendary accomplishments include 694 goals (9th best of all-time), 1193 assists (third best of all time) and 1887 points (third best of all-time). Messier’s playoff totals rank him second best of all-time behind only Wayne Gretzky with 109 goals, 186 assists and 295 points. Messier is a 6-time Stanley Cup Champion, was the winner of two Hart Memorial Trophies, two Ted Lindsay Awards, and a Conn Smythe Trophy. Messier played in 15 NHL All Star Games and was five-times named 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star. Messier was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame with the class of 2007.

Sewn to the right shoulder of this gamer is the 1998 NHL All Star Game patch. The game wear on this size 56 sweater is on the lighter side as would be expected. Sewn to the fight strap is the official alphanumeric code. On the crest is a beautiful silver sharpie signature in Messier’s own hand. The annual classic featured Team North America against Team World. In a thrilling contest, Team North America won by an 8-7 margin with Mark Messier scoring the GWG in the 3rd period on an assist from Wayne Gretzky. Messier also added a 2nd period assist to give him two points in front of the hometown crowd in Vancouver. A beautiful patched example worn on home ice during Messier’s first season in Vancouver as he netted the game-winner in the 3rd period just as you would dream up for this legendary clutch performer, choice! This jersey will be accompanied by an NHLPA letter.
