1997-98 Brendan Shanahan Detroit Red Wings Game Worn Jersey - "Believe" - Stanley Cup Season - Team Letter
Lot #78

This home white air-knit gamer by Nike was worn by Brendan Shanahan during the 1997-98 Stanley Cup winning season. The New Jersey Devils made Shanahan the 2nd overall selection in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan began his career with the New Jersey Devils in 1987-88 and as a rookie he helped lead the fledgling franchise to their first ever playoff appearance. He moved to St. Louis to begin the 1991-92 season, and spent the next four seasons with the Blues, tabbing back-to-back 50-goal seasons in 1992-93 and 1993-94, the only two times in his career that he joined the 50-Goal club. After a year in Hartford, Shanny joined the Red Wings where he battled for 9 years and captured 3 Stanley Cups before joining the New York Rangers and finally the New Jersey Devils once again before putting the wraps on his playing career.

This newly elected Hall of Famer is a two-time 50-goal man who recently retired with 656 goals and 1354 points in what was a tremendous career. His 656 goals place him 11th in the history of the sport. Lest we not forget that Shanny also spent 2489 minutes in the sin bin. He epitomizes the term power forward and will surely be forever recognized as one of the sports all time greats in that category. Shanahan was three times named a 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star and was a fixture in the annual NHL All Star game, having made 8 appearances. He has 3 Stanley Cup rings and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy to his credit. Brendan also represented Team Canada in the 1991 Canada Cup, the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and in the 1998 and 2002 Olympics.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. Sewn to the right breast is the VK & SM Believe patch in commemoration of the tragic limousine accident involving teammate Vladimir Konstantinov and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov following the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals celebration. The sleeves of this gamer have been custom shortened by the Wings for Shanahan. The game wear on this 1st set size 56 sweater is solid and consists of hundreds of stick, slash and tape marks, board burns, pulls, inner pilling and a couple of team-sewn repairs. On the inside hem is the official Detroit Red Wings game worn jersey and set tagging. A superb well-worn example from a Cup winning year, complete with letter of honor and the coveted Believe patch, choice! This jersey will be accompanied by a Red Wings team letter.
