1996-97 Wayne Gretzky New York Rangers Game Worn Jersey - Video Provenance
Lot #54

A jersey as special as this one is always made better by a real life story. The jersey and its story are both phenomenal, going hand in hand and making for a truly special offering.

This blue air-knit Statue of Liberty alternate gamer by Starter was worn by Wayne Gretzky during the 1996-97 NHL season, his first with the New York Rangers. Headlines were made as Gretzky took his act to Broadway, where he reunited with former Oilers teammate and good friend Mark Messier. Despite their advanced age, the magic returned as the Rangers made their last serious challenge to date at a Stanley Cup, falling just short in the Eastern Conference Finals. Gretzky suited up for all 82 regular season contests scoring 97 points, his highest output in quite a few years. In 15 playoff games, The Great One scored 10 goals and 20 points falling just short of the Stanley Cup Finals as the Flyers and their Eric Lindros led Legion of Doom proved too tough a task to skate by. This incredible jersey was worn during that historic first season, as a member of the New York Rangers.

Gretzky is considered to be the greatest hockey player of all time. His career achievements do nothing to dispel those opinions. He is the record holder in more categories than there is room to list. Some of his more important accomplishments are: All-time leader in regular season goals 894, assists 1963, points 2857, playoff goals 122, playoff assists 260 and playoff points 382. He holds the single season marks for goals 92, assists 163 and points 215. His trophy case includes 4 Stanley Cups, 5 Lady Byng Trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, 1 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, 5 Lester B. Pearson awards as the NHL’s outstanding player, 10 Art Ross Trophies for leading the NHL in scoring, 2 Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP and 9 Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s MVP. Gretzky was 15 times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and played in 18 NHL All Star games. He proudly represented Team Canada in the 1981, 84, 87 and 91 Canada Cups, the 1996 World Cup and the Olympics. Immediately upon his retirement from hockey, the normal waiting period having been waived, Wayne was unanimously elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

High atop the right breast sits a beautiful silver sharpie autograph in Gretzky’s own hand. This jersey was customized for The Great One directly by Starter. All of the bells and whistles are present as they should be on this amazing gamer. If you have specific questions regarding the customizations on this jersey please call our offices and we will be happy to share these details with you. Despite the predominantly dark coloration of this sweater, game wear is visible in the form of stick marks and board burns. Keep in mind, these first year alternates didn’t see a lot of ice time, making this offering all the more special.

The provenance of this gamer is simply wonderful. This gamer was worn during Gretzky’s first season with the Rangers. As we have come to understand it, this jersey was given by Gretzky himself to New York Rangers teammate Doug Lidster, who in turn donated it to his hometown Kamloops, BC charity auction to benefit the Special Olympics. This gamer was purchased on behalf of our consignor directly from the aforementionted charity auction in British Columbia. Shown above is a video highlight of a British Columbia TV news/sports segment which aired prior to the Special Olympics charity auction taking place. As you can well see, this Gretzky jersey is front and center, being worn by the TV news reporter who is standing alongside the organizer of the charity event. The event organizer is wearing a team signed Team Canada jersey as they announce the details of the upcoming event. The details mentioned in the telecast further cement this gamers’ year of origin to Wayne’s first season in New York. Mentioned is the recent Gold Medal winning Team Canada club from the 1996-97 World Championships, who happened to sign the jersey being worn by the charity organizer. Some of the other fantastic nuggets discussed are this jersey having in fact been worn by Gretzky in a game ‘last season’ as well as the present day value in Vancouver of this Gretzky game worn jersey. If you’ve been waiting forever for an opportunity to purchase a Gretzky Rangers jersey with rock solid provenance, your wait is now over. A simply outstanding offering!
