This white, red and grey blocker and catcher by Cooper were worn by future Hall of Fame goaltender Dominik Hasek while playing for the Sabres in 1996-97. Dominik is the owner of 6 Vezina Trophies as the league’s most valuable goaltender as well as 2 Jenning’s Trophies for fewest goals allowed. Despite a 9-year pro career in the Czech Republic, forcing a very late beginning to his NHL career, Dominik has amassed staggering career awards and statistics. Dominik has been numerous times a 1st team NHL All Star. In addition to the 6 Vezina’s and the 2 Jennings trophies he is also the holder of 2 Lester B. Pearson awards as the NHL’s outstanding player and 2 Hart Memorial Trophies as league MVP. The Pearson Award and Hart Trophy are rarely given to a goaltender, making his total of two of each all the more remarkable. He also led the Czech national team to it's first gold medal in the 1998 Olympics.
In 2001-02, his last season before his announced retirement, Hasek won the Trophy that had eluded him to that point, the Stanley Cup, as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Dominik decided to make a comeback in 2003-04 and won his second Stanley Cup with the Red Wings this past season before calling it quits for good. His 81 career shutouts place him tied for sixth on the all time list, while his wins total of 389 places him in the top 10 all-time in that category. Dom will be remembered as one of the most dominating players we’ll have seen play in our lifetimes. A first ballot Hall of Fame induction no doubt awaits him.
These gloves were worn during the 1996-97 season in which Dom clearly asserted himself as the league's best goaltender. That season Dom walked away with all the hardware including the Vezina trophy, the Jennings trophy, the Lester B. Pearson award, the Hart trophy as well as a first team All Star selection. Shown above are numerous photo matches of Dominik wearing this exact blocker and catcher in game action. Finding equipment from Hall of Fame goaltenders is not an easy task, add them being photo matched this many times and you have a truly special piece. For the Hasek collector who is looking for the extraordinary.
