1996-97 Craig Berube Washington Capitals Game Worn Jersey - "JB" - Photo Match - Video Match
Lot #553

This home white air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Craig Berube during the 1996-97 NHL season. The Chief wreaked havoc on the opposition during his 17-year career. As one of the NHL’s premier enforcers, Berube racked up 3149 PIMS, good for 7th on the NHL’s all-time list. His first 5 seasons, and parts of 7 in all, were spent with the Philadelphia Flyers, with whom he began his career with a 7 game stint in 1986-87. During his 323 game career as a Flyer ‘The Chief’ amassed 1138 PIMS, wow! Toronto, Calgary, Washington and the New York Islanders were The Chief’s other cities of residence during his career. Since retiring, Craig has been behind the bench for the Philadelphia Flyers and Phantoms.

Beube spent 6 seasons with the Washington Capitals. He joined the team in 1993-94 and remained until the deadline deal that sent him back to Philadelphia in the spring of 1999. “The Chief” went to the Stanley Cup Finals as a member of the Caps in 1997-98. Also, while with Washington, he racked up a single season career best 305 PIMS in his first year with the team!

Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the JB patch, in honor of the passing of long time Washington Capitals executive Jack Bulldog Button. The sleeves on this gamer have been custom widened to allow more room for Berube to let fly by having 4 inches of additional width sewn into them. The game wear is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and heavy inner pilling. Obvious fight abuse exists with washed out bloodstains and a fight strap that had been reinforced with additional stitch work, many of which have popped from abuse. Shown above are some video highlights of Berube wearing this exact jersey during a road game on March 12th 1997 against the New York Rangers at MSG. The Rangers were wearing their blue Liberty alternates that night, thus mandating that the Caps wear their home whites. Also shown above is a photo match of a screen capture from the aforementioned game that shows Berube wearing this exact jersey. A terrific patched and matched gamer worn by one of hockey’s all-time great heavyweights.
