1995-96 Saku Koivu Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey Rookie
Lot #112

This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Saku Koivu during the 1995-96 NHL season, his rookie year. The Montreal Canadiens selected Koivu in the 1st round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. After leaving Turku, Finland in 1995, Koivu embarked on an NHL career that began in 1995-96 with the Montreal Canadiens where he played for 13 seasons. Saku spent the final 5 years of his NHL career with the Anaheim Ducks. Koivu is tied with Jean Beliveau as the longest serving Captain in the storied history of the Canadiens franchise, serving in that role for 10 years. Koivu was also the first European born player to wear the distinguished “C” with Les Habitants.

In September of 2001, Koivu learned that he was suffering from non-Hodgkins lymphoma, causing him to miss nearly the entire 2001-02 campaign. His remarkable comeback and the continuance of his NHL career proved quite inspirational to many and won him the 2001-02 Bill Masterton Trophy. Saku was also the recipient of the 2006-07 King Clancy Memorial Trophy. This NHL All Star also played in two World Cups of Hockey, numerous World Championships and four Olympics while representing his native Finland.

The game wear on this size 52 rookie sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, plenty of board burns, board paint transfer and unrepaired burn holes, pulls and fine inner pilling. On the upper verso alongside the nameplate is a beautiful bold black sharpie signature in Koivu’s own hand. A beautiful well-worn sweater, donned by one of Finland’s all-time greats during his rookie NHL season!
