1995-96 Paul Stewart Referee Worn Jersey
Lot #159

This black and white knit jersey by CCM was worn by Paul Stewart during the 1995-96 NHL season. This Massachusetts native began his career at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1970’s. After leaving school, Stewart played for a few seasons with the Binghamton Dusters and spent a brief time with the New Haven Nighthawks, before joining the WHA. Paul played for the Edmonton Oilers and the Cincinnati Stingers over the course of 3 WHA seasons. He would then go on to play for the Quebec Nordiques in their inaugural NHL season. In 40 games with the WHA”s Cincinnati Stingers in 1977-78, Stewart amassed an incredible 241 PIMS!

After his playing days were over Stewart, turned to officiating. He worked his first game as a referee in 1986 and went on to become the first American born referee to officiate 1000 games! Paul is also well known for his courage having defeated Cancer back in 1998.

This referee’s sweater shows fine use consisting of stick marks, board burns and heavy areas of pilling. Penned in black sharpie on the left sleeve is an autograph in Paul’s own hand with the further notation “#22, #1000 FLA@BOS 3/15/03, #1010 BUF@BOS 4/5/03, That’s All Folks! A tremendous offering that was worn by this one-time goon, during his record-breaking career as an NHL referee.
