1995-96 Jari Kurri New York Rangers Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #93

This road blue mesh gamer by CCM and Cosby was worn by Jari Kurri during the 1995-96 NHL season. It’s hard to believe that the first-born Hall of Famer from Finland lasted until the 4th round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. It was in that moment that the Oilers found the perfect compliment to play alongside Wayne Gretzky for the better part of the next decade. Kurri’s Hall of Fame career spanned 17 NHL seasons. The first 10 of those were spent in Edmonton where Jari went to 6 Stanley Cup Finals and walked away with 5 Stanley Cup rings. So great was his legacy in Edmonton, where he is 2nd in all-time points for an Oiler behind only Wayne Gretzky, that his number 17 was retired by the team.

Kurri would eventually follow Gretzky to Los Angeles where the tandem was again found playing for Lord Stanley’s Cup in 1993. Jari spent 5 years in Los Angeles before a deadline deal in 1996 reunited him with former teammate Mark Messier in New York. He went on to finish his career with single seasons in Anaheim and Colorado.

In 1251 career regular season games, Kurri netted 601 goals and added 797 assists for a total of 1398 points. Kurri ranks 3rd on the all-time playoff scoring list with 233 points, trailing only his Edmonton teammates, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Kurri won the 1985 Lady Byng Trophy and was 5 times a 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star while also partaking in 8 NHL All Star games. On the international stage, Kurri played in the 1980 and 1998 Olympics, the 1981, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups, Rendezvous ’87, numerous World Championships and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. To say he is revered in his native Finland would be an understatement, as he continues to support the country’s hockey programs to this day.

The game wear on this 2nd set size 56 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes and heavy inner pilling. Shown above are a couple of beautiful photo matches of Kurri wearing this exact jersey during the 1995-96 season. On the inside hem is the official New York Rangers game worn jersey and set stamp. Kurri played in 14 regular season games after the Rangers acquired him from the LA Kings at the 1996 deadline. Unquestionably the toughest Kurri gamer for a collector to acquire is one from his brief time with the New York Rangers. To our knowledge this is the first time that one of Jari’s New York Rangers gamers have ever come up for bid at Major Auction. A fantastic photo matched offering that was worn by one of the NHL’s all-time greats, choice!
