1992-93 Rod Houk Wheeling Thunderbirds Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Season
Lot #359

This black air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Rod Houk during the 1992-93 ECHL season, the Wheeling Thunderbirds inaugural season. The Minnesota North Stars selected Houk in the 1990 NHL Supplemental Draft. After playing his junior hockey with the WHL’s Regina Pats, this Goalie made his professional debut in 1991-92 in the IHL with the San Diego Gulls and Kalamazoo Wings. Houk next stood between the pipes for the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers for parts of two seasons before finishing up his playing career with the Wheeling Thunderbirds.

The game wear on this size 54 sweater consists of stick, slash and puck marks, inner pilling and a sizable crudely stitched team-sewn repair that runs several inches down and several more across the belly with some un-repaired trauma left in its wake. Houk and the Thunderbirds enjoyed immense success during the team’s inaugural campaign. Rod posted a 2.97 GAA to lead his club while Wheeling compiled an impressive 40 Wins against only 16 losses and made it all the way to the Riley Cup Finals. This is the first Wheeling Thunderbirds gamer that we’ve had the privilege to run through auction. A nice vintage Goalie gamer from the inaugural season of the short-lived Wheeling Thunderbirds franchise.
