1991-92 Pierre Turgeon Islanders Game Worn Jersey - "75-Year & 20-Year Anniversary"
Lot #41

This home white air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Pierre Turgeon during the 1991-92 NHL season. This was Pierre's first season as a member of the New York Islanders. A blockbuster deal was pulled off less than a month into the 1991-92 campaign that saw the main cogs for each the Islanders and Sabres change teams. The principals were Pat LaFontaine, who was exchanged for Pierre Turgeon among a slew of others for both teams.

Pierre caught on fire on the Island netting 38 goals and 87 points in his partial season of 69 games for them in 1991-92. The 1992-93 campaign saw Turgeon and his team become the temporary focus of the hockey world. As the upstart Islanders were beginning their march through the 1993 playoffs, perhaps the worst cheap shot of all-time was dished out by Washington Capitals center Dale Hunter on Pierre Turgeon. This cheap shot left Turgeon with a separated shoulder and sent the Islanders dreams of Stanley Cup glory into the abyss. The Islanders rallied together following the loss of their star by defeating the Capitals. In the next series the Islanders pulled off one of the greatest Stanley Cup playoff upsets in history, as they knocked off the 2-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in game 7 OT. Their flame died out in the Semi-Finals against the eventual Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Hunter, for his act, was leveled with a ground-breaking suspension to begin the following season. The 1992-93 regular season saw Turgeon register 58 goals, 74 assists and 132 points. This placed him as the 5th leading scorer in the game that season. Pierre was the recipient of the Lady Byng trophy for his play in the 1992-93 season. The Lady Byng trophy is awarded to the player who shows the greatest combination of sportsmanship and high ability.

In addition to numerous NHL All Star game appearances, Turgeon is a member of the 500-goal club and has surpassed the 1300-point plateau. These compelling career numbers should certainly earn him a Hall of Fame induction when his playing days are complete.

Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the 75-year NHL anniversary patch. Sewn to the left shoulder is the desirable 20-year New York Islanders anniversary patch. The game wear on this sweater is solid consisting of numerous stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, washed out bloodstains, inner pilling, un-repaired holes and a handful of team-sewn repairs. This is one of the finest Turgeon sweaters to ever come to market, and a highly desirable 2-patched example at that. A must have for any Hall of Fame speculator.
