1990-91 Joe Mullen Penguins Game Worn Jersey
Lot #27

This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Hall of Famer Joe Mullen during the early part of the Pittsburgh Penguins first Stanley Cup winning season. Mullen, who grew up in New York’s tough Hell’s Kitchen, is the only U.S. born player to have scored 500 NHL goals. He is a member of the 1000-point club as well as the Hockey Hall of Fame.

He owns a Lester Patrick trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, (2) Lady Byng trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability as well as (3) Stanley Cups championships, including 2 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mullen represented Team USA in 3 different Canada Cup games. Some insist that it was Mullen’s addition to the Pens, in this their first ever Cup winning season, that helped push them over the Stanley Cup playoff hurdle.

Sewn to the left shoulder of this gamer is the 1990 41st NHL All Star game patch. The 1990 NHL All Star game was held at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena. The early part of the 1990-91 season saw the Penguins continue to wear the All Star game patch. The Chicago Black Hawks, host of the 1991 NHL All Star game, lodged a complaint with the league and the league ruled that the Pens were no longer allowed to wear the All Star game patches on their game jerseys. This caused the Penguins to place thiis set of gamers into pre-mature retirement.

The game wear is on the light side as it should be, consisting of many stick marks and some board burns. There is a nameplate change on the back of this sweater, which helps add to its historical value, thus confirming this as Joe’s first ever Pittsburgh Penguins jersey. This gamer is from the only set of All Star game patch jerseys worn during the Pens 1st Cup winning season making it forever a special piece of Pittsburgh Penguins team history.
