1989-90 Wayne Gretzky Kings Game Worn Jersey - HHOF letter
Lot #2

This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Wayne Gretzky during the 1st half of the 1989-90 NHL season. This was Wayne’s 2nd season in LA and his first as Team Captain of the Kings, a title he assumed from longtime LA Team Captain Dave Taylor. Dating this sweater to the 1st half of that season makes this one of; if not the first jersey Wayne wore as Captain of the Kings.

Gretzky is considered to be the greatest hockey player of all time. His career achievements do nothing to dispel those opinions. He is the record holder in more categories than there is room to list. Some of his more important accomplishments are: All-time leader in regular season goals 894, assists 1963, points 2857, playoff goals 122, playoff assists 260 and playoff points 382. He holds the single season marks for goals 92, assists 163 and points 215. His trophy case includes 4 Stanley Cups, 5 Lady Byng Trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, 1 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, 5 Lester B. Pearson awards as the NHL’s outstanding player, 10 Art Ross Trophies for leading the NHL in scoring, 2 Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP and 9 Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s MVP. Gretzky was 15 times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and played in 18 NHL All Star games. He proudly represented Team Canada in the 1981, 84, 87 and 91 Canada Cups, the 1996 World Cup and the Olympics. Immediately upon his retirement from hockey, the normal waiting period having been waived, Wayne was unanimously elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Sewn proudly to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. This gamer has been customized to Wayne’s very specific requirements including the unique cut and size as well as the proper removal and additions to both the inside and outside of this sweater. The game wear is as nice as we’ve ever seen on a Kings Gretzky and consists of many stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, pilling in all of the proper places both inside and out and a couple of team-sewn repairs. Extending from the repair found on the lower body of this gamer is an elongated burn which may have been the culprit which originally caused the material to seperate in that area. The other repair is housed on the right elbow.

This example is, without question, the finest LA Gretzky we’ve ever laid eyes upon. It is perfect in all respects and was quite possibly Wayne’s first ever Captain’s jersey worn in LA. The Great One was the major reason for the revival of hockey in the state of California. Not coincidentally, soon after # 99’s arrival in LA, the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Mighty Ducks would be given NHL franchise life. This is a historic piece of hockey history, worn by its greatest all-time player and spokesman. It is a Hall of Fame quality example for those who require the best.

This magnificent jersey had been in the same private hands dating back to the early 1990’s before making its way to the hobby via Spivack & Kraut not too long ago. The original owner, who is well known in collecting circles, submitted this gamer to the Hockey Hall of Fame for official authentication in April of 1992. Included with your purchase will be the original dated LOA from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
