1989-90 Steve Martinson Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey
Lot #126

This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Steve Martinson during the 1989-90 NHL season. This Minnetonka, MN native spent a couple of seasons playing his college hockey at St. Cloud State before beginning his professional career in 1981-82. Martinson made his NHL debut in 1987-88 with the Detroit Red Wings where he played for a lone season. He next spent two years with the Montreal Canadiens and later did one final stint with the Minnesota North Stars in 1991-92. In 49 career NHL games Martinson accumulated 244 PIMS.

Surrounding his short-lived NHL career was a legendary 14-year career in the minors. Steve played primarily in the IHL and the AHL and earned a reputation as one of the best minor league pugilists. Martinson put forth a career best 432 PIMS in 69 games for the Hershey Bears in 1985-86!

Following his playing days, Martinson took over the head coaching duties for the San Diego Gulls of the WCHL and won 5 championships in 9 seasons including 3 in a row in his first 3 years! He later moved on to coach the Rockford IceHogs of the UHL and won another championship. After stints with the Elmira Jackets and Chicago Express of the ECHL, Martinson took over the helm for the Allen Americans of the CHL and ECHL and proceeded to win 4 championships in his first 4 years behind the bench! Martinson has already won 10 championships as a Head Coach in 20 seasons behind the bench, wow!

The game wear on this size 52 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, inner pilling and a good amount of washed out bloodstaining. The 1989-90 season saw Martinson play in 13 games for Les Habitants during which time he accumulated 64 PIMS, nearly 5 PIMS per game! A nice offering from a legendary tough guy and a current coaching legend.
