1989-90 Pat LaFontaine New York Islanders Game Issued Jersey The Terrence Murphy Collection Joe Murphy Letter
Lot #44
This fresh to the hobby example comes directly from the personal collection of longtime New York Islanders employee Terrence Murphy. Terry worked for the New York Islanders from 1983 through 1992, beginning as their stick boy until being promoted to Assistant Equipment Manager in 1988. A letter of provenance signed by Mr. Murphy’s son will accompany your purchase. These exciting items are being offered to the hobby for the first time exclusively at GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET.

This home white air-knit jersey by CCM was issued for use to Pat LaFontaine for the 1989-90 NHL season. The New York Islanders selected Lafontaine with the 3rd overall pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. This St. Louis, MO native made his NHL debut in 1983-84 with the Islanders where he starred for 8 seasons before a blockbuster trade in 1991 sent him to the Buffalo Sabres. Pat spent 6 seasons with the Sabres and one final year with the New York Rangers before announcing his early retirement due to concussions. A regrettable string of injuries struck Pat’s career in its prime and ultimately cost him what would surely have been very lofty elite NHL totals.

Despite the injury-shortened career, Pat still managed seven 40-goal seasons including two of 50 or more. His 148 points during the 1992-93 campaign was one of the decade’s highest totals and earned him 2nd Team NHL All Star honors. When injury forced LaFontaine into retirement, he took with him 468 career goals and over 1000 career points. LaFontaine was the 1994-95 winner of the Bill Masterton trophy for the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Pat was a staple in the NHL All Star game during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s as he blossomed into one of the sport’s biggest stars. He also dedicated himself to Team USA and represented them in two Olympics, two Canada Cups and the inaugural World Cup of Hockey. LaFontaine was one of the classiest players of his generation and was deservingly awarded with an induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this unused size 52 jersey is the alternate Captain’s “A”. A nice keepsake from the latter part of Lafontaine’s tenure with the Islanders that comes directly from the personal collection of Terrence Murphy.
