1989-90 Mike Vernon Calgary Flames Game Worn Jersey – “10-year Anniversary” - All Star Season
Lot #64

This home white air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Mike Vernon during the 1989-90 NHL season. The Calgary Flames selected Vernon in the 3rd round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. This Calgary native starred locally with the WHL’s Calgary Wranglers, thus prompting the Flames to select him. He soon became the WHL’s most accomplished player, winning the 1982 and 1983 WHL Player of the Year, Goaltender of the Year and being named 1st Team WHL All Star both seasons. Vernon got his first NHL call-up in 1982-83 where he played a couple of games. The following season he played just a single NHL game. Vernon didn’t see another NHL game until he was called up to Calgary in 1985-86. He captured the starting job that season and never looked back, leading the Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals later that spring. Vernon spent 11 seasons wearing a Flames uniform during his first go around and another two prior to retiring in 2002. He led the Flames to their 1st Stanley Cup title in 1989 and was honored by Calgary when they retired his number 30 to the rafters in 2007.

Vernon spent 6 NHL seasons away from his hometown where he represented the Red Wings, Sharks and Panthers. He led Detroit to a pair of Stanley Cup Finals in his three seasons with the club and was brilliant during their 1997 Championship run, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Mike captured the Jennings Trophy in 1996 and was a 2nd Team NHL All Star in 1989 with Calgary. This five-time NHL All Star retired with 385 career Wins, which places him 15th on the all-time list.

Sewn to the left shoulder of this gamer is the Calgary Flames 10-year anniversary patch. The sleeves on this jersey have been custom shortened for Vernon by the team. The game wear on this 3rd set size 52 sweater consists of stick and puck marks and pilling. The origins of this jersey trace it back to a purchase directly from the team back in the 1990’s. Vernon followed up the Flames first Stanley Cup Championship with his third consecutive All Star season. A nice customized patched offering worn by this two-time Stanley Cup winner in defense of their 1989 Championship.
