1989-90 John Kordic Toronto Maple Leafs Game Worn Jersey - Career Best 252 PIMS - Photo Match
Lot #8
This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by John Kordic during the 1989-90 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Kordic in the 4th round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. This Edmonton native, nicknamed “Rambo”, made his NHL debut in 1985-86 with the Canadiens, where he celebrated a Stanley Cup later that spring. Kordic spent parts of four seasons with Montreal before being dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Russ Courtnall in November 1988. Kordic spent a few years with the Leafs before having his career cut short following brief stints in Washington and Quebec. “Rambo’s” NHL career spanned merely 244 games over the course of 7 seasons. This enforcer took on any and all comers and amassed better than 4 PIMS per game, with 997 PIMS all told.

On a fateful August night in the summer of 1992, Kordic, who had struggled with ongoing substance abuse issues, had his life come to an untimely end. John was full of substance and steroids and found himself lying prone, strapped to a stretcher in the back of an ambulance after doing battle with the Quebec police department at his motel. Police had finally subdued the enforcer, pinning his hands behind his back by two pair of handcuffs that were linked in a makeshift chain, while his feet were bound by rope. Soon after, Kordic passed away, officially of lung failure due to heart malfunction at the age of 27.

This jersey has been heavily customized for Kordic by the Leafs. The sleeves have been custom shortened to the elbow. Additionally, the left sleeve was slit from cuff to armpit where illegal Velcro was sewn in. During the season, league officials caught wind of the violation and forced its removal. Remnants of the Velcro and stitching outlines remain readily evident. The slit extending from left cuff to armpit has been repaired and an extra swatch of material was added by the Leafs to the armpit to enlarge its size.

The game wear on this 1st set size 54 Goalie cut sweater is solid with plenty of fight abuse and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, washed out bloodstains, trauma, exterior pilling and heavy inner pilling. The front collar has been stretched by the hands of the opposition and left un-repaired with stitch popping that remains in its wake. The fight strap has lost the battle to salt and rust. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Kordic wearing this exact jersey during the 1989-90 season. Kodic appeared in 55 games and set a career best 252 PIMS while wearing this sweater on home ice at Maple Leaf Gardens. Also of note, this jersey features the honored player number 27 of Hall of Famer’s Frank Mahovlich and Darryl Sittler. Considered a Holy Grail by collectors of enforcers, tough guys and goons, this heavily customized, fight abused photo matched example would become an instant cornerstone in any fight fans’ collection, choice!
