1989-90 Guy Carbonneau Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey - 1st Captain’s Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #43

This road red knit gamer by CCM was worn by Guy Carbonneau during the 1989-90 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Carbonneau in the 3rd round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Guy made his NHL debut in 1980-81 with Les Habitants and spent the first 13 years of his 19-year, 1318-game NHL career with Montreal. Following 2 Stanley Cup titles with the Canadiens, Carbonneau spent a season with the St. Louis Blues before joining the Dallas Stars where he spent the final 5 years of his storied career. During his final 2 years with the Stars, Carbonneau made back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Finals and skated away with his 3rd Stanley Cup ring. In the tradition of Bob Gainey before him, Carbonneau took over the reigns as the NHL’s best defensive forward and was so recognized with 3 Frank J. Selke Trophies spanning 1988 to 1992.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, material pulls, heavy inner pilling and more than a dozen team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Carbonneau wearing this exact jersey during the 1989-90 season. After the retirement of Bob Gainey following the 1989 Stanley Cup Finals, Guy Carboneau and Chris Chelios both wore the Captain’s “C” during the 1989-90 season for Montreal. Carbonneau would of course assume the role full time, wearing the prestigious letter for five seasons until leaving the team following the 1994-95 campaign. This beautiful jersey was Carbonneau’s first in his role as the Montreal Canadiens Captain. A terrific well-worn photo matched offering that sports the coveted letter of honor.
