1989-90 Barry Pederson 1991-92 Ron Francis Pittsburgh Penguins Game Worn Jersey – “25-year Anniversary” – “Badger Bob” – Photo Match
Lot #68
This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Barry Pederson during the 1989-90 NHL season. This sweater was later prepared for use by Ron Francis for the 1991-92 season. The Boston Bruins selected Pederson in the 1st round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. This Big River, SASK native made his NHL debut in 1980-81 with a brief call up to the Bruins. Barry spent 6 seasons in Boston and was looked upon as one of the NHL’s brightest young stars after his first three full years in the league. During that time, he recorded goal totals of 44, 46 and 39 to go along with point totals of 92, 107 and 116. In 11 playoff games in 1982, Barry scored 7 goals and 18 points. He followed it up the next season with 14 goals and 32 points in 17 playoff games as the Bruins went to the 1983 Conference Finals.

Pederson’s career was never the same after he missed the majority of the 1984-85 season following surgery to remove a benign tumor from his shoulder. In 1986, Boston GM Harry Sinden dealt Pederson to the Vancouver Canucks. So highly thought of was Pederson, the Bruins received Vancouver’s 1st round draft choice, 3rd overall in 1987 (Glen Wesley) and future Hall of Famer Cam Neely in exchange. Pederson spent the next three plus years with the Canucks where he would become Team Captain for part of his tenure. Another deal sent Barry to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1989-90. Pederson spent the next two years with the Penguins before finishing his career with a final season in New England, playing for both the Whalers and Bruins. In 701 career games, Pederson scored 238 goals and 654 points while appearing in two NHL All Star Games.

Sewn to the right shoulder of this gamer is the Pittsburgh Penguins 25-year anniversary patch. Sewn to the left shoulder, above the outline of the 1990 NHL All Star patch, is the Badger Bob patch. Sewn to the right breast is the NHL’s 75-year anniversary patch. Removed from the left breast is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, inner pilling and a number of team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Pederson wearing this exact jersey during the 1989-90 season. We have thus far been unsuccessful finding an image of Francis wearing this sweater. A well-worn multi-patched photo matched example whose origins we have traced back to its original purchase directly from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1990’s.
