1989-90 Alexander Mogilny Buffalo Sabres Game Worn Jersey – Rookie – “20-year Anniversary” - Photo Match
Lot #32

This road blue knit gamer by CCM was worn by Alexander Mogilny during the 1989-90 NHL season, his rookie year. The Buffalo Sabres selected Mogilny in the 5th round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. This gifted Russian born winger made his NHL debut in 1989-90 with the Sabres where he electrified fans for 6 seasons in Buffalo. Mogilny played alongside Hall of Famer Pat Lafontaine for much of his tenure and in 1992-93 he recorded a season for the ages. In 77 games played, Alex registered one of the highest single season goals totals in NHL history as he lit the lamp a resounding 76 times!

After 6 impressive seasons with the Sabres, Mogilny landed in Vancouver where he spent the next 5 seasons. He netted 55 goals in his first year with his new team. A deadline deal in 99-00, from the Canucks to the Devils, proved to be what New Jersey needed as they plowed to a Stanley Cup Championship giving Mogilny his first and only Stanley Cup win. The next season, Mogilny helped land New Jersey back in the Cup Finals where they fell to the Avalanche in a hard-fought 7-game series. Alex would next spend 3 years wearing the Maple Leafs colors before one last trip back to New Jersey in 2005-06. Mogilny was awarded the 2002-03 Lady Byng Trophy, which is awarded for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability. In 16 NHL seasons, Mogilny posted career totals of 473 goals and 1032 points, having left his mark as one of the more feared snipers of his generation. He was twice a 2nd Team NHL All Star at RW and earned the right to play in 4 NHL All Star games. Mogilny was elected to the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame in 2011. Internationally, Alexander represented the Soviet Union in the World Junior Championships, the World Championships and the 1988 Olympics. He represented Russia in the inaugural 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the Buffalo Sabres 20-year anniversary patch. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, a salted fight strap and fine inner pilling. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Mogilny wearing this exact jersey in Vancouver on January 13, 1990. A well-worn photo matched offering that sports the coveted 20-year anniversary patch and was worn by Mogilny during his rookie season, choice!
