1988-89 Viacheslav Fetisov CCCP Soviet National Team Game Worn Jersey
Lot #57

This white mesh and knit gamer by Kisapuku of Finland was worn by Viacheslav Fetisov during international play while skating for the Soviet National team during the 1988-89 season. The New Jersey Devils selected Fetisov in the 8th round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Slava spent the first 15 years of his Hall of Fame career playing in the Soviet Union for the Red Army and National Team. During that time he earned numerous accolades, became the Russian Team Captain and is thought of as the greatest defenseman in the history of Russian hockey. Fetisov competed in numerous World Championships, 4 Super Series, Rendezvous ‘87, 2 Canada Cups, the World Cup of Hockey and 3 Olympics including the 1980 Miracle on Ice games at Lake Placid.

With an astounding 13 Gold Medals to his credit, Slava is considered one of the best defenseman of all-time. In fact, Fetisov was the leading vote getter of the 6 players that were selected by the IIHF to the Centennial All-Star Team!

Fetisov began his NHL career at 31 years of age. He spent 9 seasons in the NHL, splitting his time between the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings and played in a pair of NHL All Star Games. In his 3+ seasons with the Red Wings, Fetisov spearheaded the “Russian 5” and his leadership helped guide the team to 3 Stanley Cup Finals. He won back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1997 and 1998 and retired after hoisting the Cup in the spring of 1998.

Removed from the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “K”. The game wear on this size 54-56 sweater is solid and consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, washed out bloodstains and inner pilling. Shown above is a program cover that shows the Russian National Team wearing this exact set of white jerseys during the 1988-89 season. Also shown above is a photo of Fetisov wearing this style in red along with the legendary KLM line, Krutov, Larionov and Makarov as well as his defensive partner Alexei Kasatonov. A beautiful black sharpie signature in Fetisov’s own hand can be found across the chest. An incredible well-worn offering of this legendary Hall of Famer from his time as the Captain of the Soviet National Team, choice!
