1988-89 Rick Vaive Buffalo Sabres Game Worn Jersey
Lot #66

This road blue knit gamer by CCM was worn by Rick Vaive during the 1988-89 NHL season. The Vancouver Canucks selected Vaive with the 5th overall pick in the 1979 NHL entry draft. Vaive played a lone season with the WHA’s Birmingham Bulls and led the league in PIMS with 248! Rick began his NHL career with Vancouver in 1979-80, a city he played in for a total of 47 games before being dealt in a blockbuster deal to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Tiger Williams. Vaive played for parts of 8 seasons with the Leafs, where he became one of the most prolific scorers in franchise history. Rick joined the Chicago Blackhawks for the 1987-88 season and spent parts of two years with the Hawks before joining the Buffalo Sabres in December of 1988. Following parts of 4 seasons with the Sabres, Vaive called it quits on a 13-year NHL career.

Vaive was an instant hit in Toronto. When team Captain Darryl Sittler stepped down from that role following the 1980-81 season, Rick stepped up and assumed the role of leadership in only his 2nd NHL season! He held the role of Team Captain for 5 years. In Vaive’s first season as Captain with the Leafs, he joined the 50-goal club with a 54-goal outburst. The next two years also saw Vaive net better than 50 goals and a new Leafs hero had been born. Rick is one of the Maple Leafs all time leading goal scorers sitting alongside the likes of Sittler and Keon. Vaive also played with a nasty edge to his game racking up 229 PIMS in his first full season in Toronto. In 876 career NHL games, Rick scored 441 goals and amassed 1445 PIMS.  He was a 3-time NHL All Star.

The left wrist of this jersey has been opened up at the seam for Vaive. The game wear on this size 52 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and inner pilling. After his arrival in Buffalo, Vaive played in 33 games between the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs. During that stretch, he scored 21 goals and 35 points to go along with 72 PIMS, getting off to quite a start for his new team! Offered here is a beautiful well worn gamer from Vaive’s first season with the Sabres.
