1988-89 Mark Recchi Pittsburgh Penguins Game Worn Jersey Rookie Photo Match
Lot #6

This home white knit gamer by CCM and Century Sports was worn by Mark Recchi during the 1988-89 NHL season, his rookie year. The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Recchi in the 4th round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Recchi made his NHL debut in 1988-89 as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins where he would soon after team with Mario and company to capture the 1991 Stanley Cup, the first in franchise history. At the trading deadline of the following season, as the Pens were embarking on their 2nd Stanley Cup run, Recchi was dealt to the Flyers in exchange for Rick Tocchet.

Mark represented Philadelphia for parts of four seasons, where he teamed with a young Eric Lindros to form one of the deadliest duos in the sport before heading to the Montreal Canadiens in yet another blockbuster deal. Following five years with Les Habitants, Recchi returned to Philadelphia where he played for another 6 seasons. His next NHL stop took him back to Pittsburgh before a deadline deal in 2006 proved fruitful for the veteran winger, as he captured his 2nd Stanley Cup while on loan to the Carolina Hurricanes before returning to Pittsburgh. After leaving the Penguins in 2007-08, Recchi played for the Atlanta Thrashers, the Tampa Bay Lightning and finally the Boston Bruins for his last three seasons. In Mark’s final NHL game, he hoisted the Stanley Cup for a 3rd time while playing on his 3rd different team. In a career that spanned 1652 games, Recchi tallied 1533 points and lit the lamp a resounding 577 times. Recchi ranks 6th all time in NHL games played. He played in 7 NHL All Star Games and was named 2nd Team NHL All Star at Right Wing in 1992. Recchi was deservingly inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame with the class of 2017.

The game wear on this 1st set sweater consists of stick marks, stitch pops and inner pilling, consistent with Mark’s light rookie season schedule. Recchi made his home NHL debut while wearing this jersey at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. Shown above are a couple of beautiful photo matches of Recchi wearing this exact jersey during the 1988-89 season. Perry Ganchar opened the season wearing this sweater before it was given to Recchi following Ganchar’s retirement on October 15th just three games into the season. The Ganchar nameplate still resides sewn beneath the Recchi nameplate on the upper verso. An awesome piece of NHL history, this beautiful photo matched jersey was worn by this NHL Hall of Famer as he first took to the NHL ice in the Fall of 1988, choice!
