1988-89 Ken Morrow New York Islanders Game Issued Jersey The Terrence Murphy Collection Joe Murphy Letter
Lot #45
This fresh to the hobby example comes directly from the personal collection of longtime New York Islanders employee Terrence Murphy. Terry worked for the New York Islanders from 1983 through 1992, beginning as their stick boy until being promoted to Assistant Equipment Manager in 1988. A letter of provenance signed by Mr. Murphy’s son will accompany your purchase. These exciting items are being offered to the hobby for the first time exclusively at GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET.

This road blue air-knit jersey by CCM was issued for use to Ken Morrow for the 1988-89 NHL season. The New York Islanders selected Morrow in the 4th round of the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. This Flint, MI native spent four years at Bowling Green State University where he was three-times a 1st Team CCHA All Star and once a 2nd Team CCHA All Star. Morrow was also named the 1979 CCHA player of the year. This decorated amateur then played for the U.S. National Team in 1978 and 1979 and was then selected by Herb Brooks to play for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. Morrow played an integral role on the “Miracle On Ice” squad that eventually took home Olympic Gold in Lake Placid during the 1980 Olympics.

There would be no rest for Morrow who was immediately called into service by the New York Islanders, playing in 18 regular season games before starting a legendary playoff journey later that spring. When the miracle ride had ended a handful of years later, Kenny was able to look back on Olympic Gold, 5 straight Stanley Cup Finals appearances and 4 Stanley Cup Rings! Morrow played his entire NHL career with the Islanders where he spent a decade on their blueline, eventually succumbing to the knee injuries that plagued him throughout his entire career. During his era, Ken was considered among the best in the NHL in his own end of the ice and is often remembered for the three-playoff overtime goals that he scored for the Islanders Dynasty. Morrow was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1996 and was elected to the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995.

The 1988-89 campaign turned out to be the Olympian’s last NHL season. Morrow played in just 34 games with this size 54 sweater never making it into game action. A nice keepsake from Morrow’s final season that comes directly from the personal collection of Terrence Murphy.
