Description
1988-89 John Cullen Pittsburgh Penguins Game Worn Jersey – Rookie
Lot #47
This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by John Cullen during the 1988-89 NHL season, his rookie year. Cullen is beloved in the hockey world for having overcome his battle against non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, which nearly took his life in the 1990’s. This Boston University grad had his career cut short by Cancer, but nonetheless established himself as one of hockey’s best on the ice. Cullen is a 2-time NHL All Star, having played in the annual contest in both 1991 and 1992.

Averaging nearly a point per game throughout his NHL career, John also had a tough side as evidenced by his nearly 900 PIMS in slightly over 600 games of service. At the trading deadline in 1991, the Penguins and Whalers made a blockbuster deal sending the principals of John Cullen to Hartford in exchange for Ron Francis, showing how highly this center was thought of. Cullen owns the 1999 Bill Masterson Trophy, which is awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”, which speaks volumes about John’s leadership qualities; wearing a letter of honor as a rookie. The game wear on this rookie sweater is solid and consistis of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, washed out bloodstains, fine inner pilling and several team-sewn repairs. On the verso is a beautiful personalized black sharpie signature in Cullen’s own hand. This rookie took on all comers while wearing this gamer, accumulating his first of 3 different 100+ PIM seasons, the battle scars bearing proof. A terrific all-sewn rookie sweater of this beloved player that sports terrific game use and the coveted letter of honor.
