1988-89 Jay Caufield Pittsburgh Penguins Game Worn Jersey Career Best 285 PIMS Season
Lot #80

This home white knit gamer by CCM and Century Sports was worn by Jay Caufield during the 1988-89 NHL season. This undrafted 6’ 4” Philadelphia native played his college hockey at the University of North Dakota. Caufield made his NHL debut in 1986-87 with the New York Rangers before playing briefly for the Minnesota North Stars. Jay joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1988-89 where he played the last five-years of his NHL career. During that span, Caufield was a member of the back-to-back Stanley Cup Championship teams in 1990-91 and 1991-92. Jay’s role on the Pens was to serve as protection for Mario Lemieux and the boys. He served the role of enforcer well, amassing 759 PIMS in merely 208 regular season games during his career. Caufield set a career single season best total of 285 PIMS in his first year in Pittsburgh while playing in only 58 games!

The game wear on this sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, fight abuse with bloodstaining on the front, inner pilling and some team-sewn repair work on both sleeves. There is a bit of loss to the numbers as shown in the pictures above. A nice enforcer’s gamer that was worn during Caufield’s career best 285 PIMS season.
