Description
1988-89, 1989-90 & 1990-91 Joe Nieuwendyk Calgary Flames Game Worn Jersey - 50-Goal Season – Stanley Cup Season – 2 All Star Seasons
Lot #22
This home white air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by Joe Nieuwendyk during the 1988-89 Stanley Cup winning NHL season, the 1989-90 NHL season as well as the 1990-91 NHL pre-season. The Calgary Flames selected Nieuwendyk in the 2nd round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. After playing his college hockey at Cornell University, Nieuwendyk began his NHL career with the Flames in 1986-87 and was the 1987-88 Calder Trophy winner as the NHL’s rookie of the year. His rookie season was one for the record books as Joe netted 51 goals and 92 points. He followed it up with another 51-goal season the following year as he helped the Flames to their 1st Stanley Cup championship in team history. Joe would score 45 goals in each of the next two seasons, which got him off to one of the fastest starts in pursuit of #500 in league history.

After 9 seasons with Calgary, the Flames decided to deal Joe to the Dallas Stars in exchange for youngster Jarome Iginla. Joe would spend 7 seasons in Dallas and reach the Cup Finals twice, walking away with his 2nd ring. He then landed in New Jersey at the deadline of the 2001-02 season and thus only played one full year in New Jersey. His one complete season at the Meadowlands was a special one as it saw Joe net Goal #500 and capture his 3rd Stanley Cup title. He ended his career after brief stops in Toronto and Florida. After 20 years of service, Nieuwendyk had registered 3 Stanley Cup titles, 564 Goals and 1126 points. He was the winner of the 1994-95 King Clancy Memorial Trophy as well as the coveted Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1998-99. Joe played in 4 NHL All Star games and represented Team Canada in both the 1998 and 2002 Olympics. He was deservingly inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the class of 2011.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. Removed from the left shoulder is the Calgary Flames 10-year anniversary patch. The game wear on this 2nd set sweater is solid and consists of numerous stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired holes, un-repaired trauma to the front hem, washed out bloodstains and fine inner pilling.

Nieuwendyk first wore this sweater during the 2nd half of the 1988-89 Stanley Cup winning season. This jersey was then recycled to the 1st half of the 1989-90 season when the Flames added the 10-year anniversary patch. Finally, the team recycled this sweater to the 1990-91 pre-season when the Flames anniversary patch was removed. This jersey was on Joe’s back during the absolute prime of his Hall of Fame career, as he netted incredible goal totals of 51, 45 and 45 respectively. The first two of those years resulted in NHL All Star Game appearances. There is no season more highly cherished amongst Flames collectors than the 1988-89 season, as it remains the only one in franchise history that saw the team celebrate Lord Stanley’s Cup. A fantastic offering complete with letter of honor from this Hall of Famer’s first Stanley Cup winning season and his last 50-Goal season!
