This road blue knit gamer by CCM was worn by Kevin Maguire upon his arrival to Buffalo during the 1987-88 NHL pre-season. This jersey was originally worn during the 1984-85 NHL season. It was most likely the first ever NHL jersey worn by enforcer Bob Halkidis, who made his rookie debut during the 1985 Stanley Cup Playoffs following the completion of his OHL schedule. It is also possible that veteran Jim Wiemer wore this jersey during the first half of the 1984-85 season prior to being traded to the Rangers. Maguire, a Toronto native, began his professional career in 1984-85 with the Toronto Maple Leafs AHL affiliate, the St. Catherine Saints where he played for a few years before launching his NHL career with the Leafs in 1986-87. Maguire next spent 3 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, had a short stint in Philadelphia and then wrapped up his NHL career with a couple of seasons back in Toronto. All told this undrafted enforcer spent 6 years in the NHL. His single-season best total of 241 PIMS came in 60 games played in 1988-89 with the Sabres. In 260 NHL games played, Maguire registered 782 PIMS.
The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops, a torn and un-repaired rear collar and fine inner pilling. Halkidis played in 4 playoff games and recorded 19 PIMS while wearing this sweater on the road as a rookie. Maguire assumed this gamer during his sophomore season as he joined the Sabres after coming over from the Maple Leafs. The combined career penalty minute totals of Halkidis and Maguire are quite impressive with 1607 PIMS in 516 games played. A terrific vintage example that was worn by this pair of enforcers during the outset of their NHL careers.
