1987-88 Borje Salming Toronto Maple Leafs Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #21

This road blue knit gamer by CCM was worn by Borje Salming during the 1987-88 NHL season. This native of Sweden made his NHL debut in 1973-74 with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Salming patrolled the Leafs blue line for the first 16 years of his 17-year NHL career. Those 16 years of service and 1099 games in a Toronto uniform place Borje as the third longest tenured Leafs player in history trailing only Tim Horton and George Armstrong. Salming earned 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star honors in 6 consecutive years, spanning 1975-80. This was no small feat as his defensive contemporaries during the era included Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin, Larry Robinson, Brad Park, Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard among others. Salming was among the first Europeans to play in the NHL and was often challenged physically which he met head on, helping to pave the way to making the NHL a truly international league. Borje represented Team Sweden in the 1976 and 1981 Canada Cup as well as Team NHL during the 1979 Challenge Cup. Borje was named to the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1998 and was selected to the IIHL Centennial All Star Team in 2008. To nobody’s surprise, in 1996 Salming became the first European elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, a customized fight strap, heavy inner pilling and a dozen team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Salming wearing this exact jersey during the 1987-88 season. A tremendous well-worn photo matched offering complete with a letter of honor and worn by this Hall of Fame defenseman during the season that he played in his 1000th NHL game, choice!
